Public Health authorities have issued a warning regarding an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis, a diarrhoea-type illness, in the Brixham area of South Devon. The situation has escalated rapidly, with 22 confirmed cases and up to 100 individuals reporting symptoms to their GPs within the past week.
Immediate Precautions: Boil Tap Water
Residents in the affected region are advised to boil their tap water until further notice. Cryptosporidiosis is primarily transmitted through contaminated water, and this measure aims to prevent further spread of the parasite.
South West Water Under Scrutiny
Criticism has been directed at South West Water (SWW), which is responsible for water supply in the region. Langdon-Ward expressed frustration, stating that SWW’s response time was inadequate. The company is now investigating the Hillhead reservoir and the broader Alston area as potential sources of the outbreak. Approximately 40,000 residents rely on this water supply.
