If there’s one thing the UK does well, it’s entertainment – you only have to look around some of our biggest cities to see how many restaurants, clubs and theatres we have up and down the country. That said, it’s sometimes nice to be able to just kick back and enjoy a few hours online. Also, not all of us can get out and about as much as we’d like to.
Thankfully, you’re hardly stuck for choice when it comes to British entertainment online. Look beyond the sea of US content on social media and video platforms, and you’ll find some good old British fun! Here are a few big hints as to where you can head for entertainment online in the UK this year.
Play online games
If you’re not the sort of person to invest in a games console or a flashy PC rig, don’t worry – there are plenty of games you can play online in your internet browser, or via phone apps.
For example, mobile games such as Clash of Clans and Candy Crush Saga are still racking up big downloads in the UK with local fanbases. For kids, there are also stacks of free games to keep them busy via the BBC, MSN and Boomerang. Of course, there’s always Minecraft, which you can play on pretty much any UK device – and you can also play lots of games on streaming sticks.
For older players, there are also online casinos, where you can play with real money (please play responsibly). You could claim a Gala Bingo welcome offer and explore some slots and tables if that’s your style.
Get stuck into podcasts
If you like getting stuck into a subject but don’t really have the time to sit down and take in a show or a movie, there’s a world of podcasts out there, and there are plenty of big British shows and brands you can dig into.
Podcasts are still growing ever more popular in the UK, and if you have an iPhone or Android device, it’s really easy to search for subjects, shows and hard-hitting documentaries through an app or two. If you have a smart speaker at home, you can tune in with your voice.
Some of the most popular shows in the UK in different niches include The Rest is Politics, That Peter Crouch Podcast, No Such Thing as a Fish, Off Menu and Parenting Hell. It’s just like listening to the radio – but one show at a time!
Get reading!
Nothing beats a good book, and while plenty of us prefer to have physical paperbacks and hardbacks to hand, it has never been easier for Brits to start finding and reading new stories online. Whether that’s through eBooks or audiobooks, if you don’t have the time, space or energy for physical volumes, it’s worth exploring the web for some new things to read.
In fact, audiobook listening is on the up and up – audiobooks count for an impressive 8% of all book purchases in the UK, full stop!
Luckily, we live in a time and age when there has never been so much choice when it comes to entertainment. While there’s plenty for you to explore outside the home, if you fancy a quiet night in or want to get on with some work while keeping yourself entertained, you’re spoiled for choice!
Take a look at some of the ideas we’ve listed above, and don’t forget to think outside the box. You never know – you might pick up a new hobby or three if you’re lucky.
