Two courageous Metropolitan Police officers, PC Samuel Goard and PC George Garner, have been nominated for the National Police Bravery Awards 2024 for their exceptional valour in confronting an armed offender, despite sustaining injuries in the line of duty.
The harrowing incident unfolded in Mitchum on June 7, 2022, when police responded to reports of a disturbance involving a male and female near a vehicle. Upon arrival, the officers encountered James Boyle and attempted to engage with him. However, Boyle unleashed a bottle of ammonia, spraying PC Goard in the face, causing severe distress and fear for his life.
In his victim impact statement, PC Goard expressed his anguish and concern for his well-being and his family, fearing permanent disfigurement and the impact on his loved ones. Despite his injuries, PC Goard bravely pursued Boyle, who brandished a handgun, threatening both officers before fleeing the scene.
Undeterred by the terrifying encounter, PC Goard and PC Garner demonstrated remarkable resolve and teamwork, swiftly apprehending Boyle after an intensive investigation. Boyle’s arrest led to the recovery of the firearm used in the confrontation, along with incriminating evidence linking him to the crime.
PC Garner, reflecting on the incident, expressed his sense of vulnerability and determination to protect the public despite the grave risks faced by frontline officers. Both officers returned to duty the following day, embodying resilience and dedication to their profession.
Boyle, sentenced to 16 years’ imprisonment, was deemed a significant threat to public safety, underscoring the officers’ critical role in neutralizing a dangerous offender.
Metropolitan Police Federation Chair Rick Prior commended the officers‘ unwavering courage and swift action, emphasizing their crucial role in safeguarding communities. Detective Chief Inspector Rebecca Woodsford praised their exemplary conduct and commitment to duty, highlighting their instrumental contributions to the investigation.
