No Bags Allowed at Events During Eurovision in Malmö

As the city of Malmö gears up to host the Eurovision Song Contest, the world’s most significant music competition, officials announced a significant security measure: a bag ban at major venues. The announcement was made during a press conference, emphasizing the importance of safety as the city expects thousands of visitors.

Security Measures Take Center Stage

Per-Erik Ebbeståhl, Director of Sustainability and Security for the City of Malmö, outlined the precautions, stating, “While we can’t disclose all our security measures, visitors can expect both visible and non-visible layers of security. One of the tangible measures includes a bag ban at all event locations.”

The bag restriction will be enforced at Malmö Live and Folkets Park from May 4 to May 12. The venues will operate controlled entry points with thorough security screenings to ensure compliance.

Heightened Security Amid International Participation

The choice of Malmö as the Eurovision host city comes at a time of heightened global tension, notably due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The participation of Israel in the contest has sparked protests and led to some artists withdrawing their participation.

Ebbeståhl commented on the situation: “We respect those who choose not to participate in Eurovision. We hope for mutual respect for those who do participate. Hatred and threats have no place in Malmö or Sweden.”

Malmö’s Cultural and Strategic Appeal

Swedish Television selected Malmö for its vibrant culture and modern facilities, ideal for hosting a major international event. The city’s commitment to sustainability and its capacity to host large-scale events were also key factors.

Ebbeståhl praised the collaborative efforts across the city, “We are proud to showcase Malmö as a city that respects diverse opinions and stands firm in its values. I extend my gratitude to everyone involved in making Eurovision in Malmö a welcoming event for all.”

As Eurovision approaches, Malmö is on high alert to ensure the event is not just a celebration of music but also a testament to the city’s commitment to safety and inclusivity.
