New Prime Minister Starmer Pledges “Urgent Work” in First Address
Sir Keir Starmer Addresses Public for the First Time as Prime Minister

In his inaugural speech as Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer vowed to begin the “urgent work” of national renewal, addressing the nation from the steps of 10 Downing Street. The Labour leader, who officially took office today, acknowledged the “weariness in the heart of the nation” and the “draining away of hope” that he aims to combat.

Starmer emphasised that rebuilding trust in politics “can only be healed by actions, not words,” but insisted that his government would “make a start today.” He underscored his commitment to public service, calling it a “privilege.”

In a gesture of unity, the new Prime Minister reached out to those who did not vote for Labour, assuring them, “My government will serve you.” He expressed his belief that “politics can be a force for good,” promising to demonstrate this through his leadership.

Accompanied by his wife, Lady Victoria, Starmer was greeted by cheering supporters waving flags as he arrived at Downing Street. His address touched on key themes of respect, renewal, and unity across the four nations of the UK.

The Prime Minister paid tribute to his predecessor, Rishi Sunak, acknowledging the significance of Sunak’s tenure as the UK’s first British Asian leader. Starmer pledged to treat “every single person in this country with respect.”

Concluding his speech, Starmer committed to a “calm and patient rebuilding” and invited all to join in the “mission of national renewal.” He emphasised the urgency of the task ahead, stating, “Our work is urgent, and we begin it today.”

As he finished speaking, the new Prime Minister turned to greet those behind him before entering 10 Downing Street, marking the beginning of his tenure as the leader of the United Kingdom.
