The mother of one of Cody Fisher’s killers avoided jail despite plotting her son’s escape to Jamaica after the Boxing Day 2022 murder.
Plot to Flee: Drive to London and Cash Stash
Jahzeen Carpenter, 40, drove her son Kami Carpenter to London just a day after he stabbed Cody Fisher to death at the Crane nightclub in Digbeth, Birmingham. She arrived in her white Mercedes convertible on the evening of 27 December, while Kami was caught with two suitcases packed for flight.
Police swooped at 8.30am the next day outside flats in Lewisham, South East London, arresting both mother and son. Over £5,000 in cash was seized from Jahzeen’s car.
Flight to Jamaica Foiled
Investigators found Jahzeen had researched a Gatwick to Kingston flight her son had booked, scheduled to leave the very day they were caught. Had they succeeded, Kami Carpenter would have escaped justice.
Justice Served, But Jail Sentence Suspended
After a Wolverhampton Crown Court trial, Jahzeen pleaded guilty to assisting an offender. She was sentenced to two years in prison, suspended for two years.
“While Cody’s family were grieving, Carpenter’s mother was trying to help her son avoid capture and flee to Jamaica,” said Det Insp Phil Poole of West Midlands Police. “Thanks to close work with Metropolitan Police, they were arrested before Kami could leave the country. This conviction shows just how many lives knife crime destroys.”
Life Sentences for Murderers
- Kami Carpenter, 24, was jailed for life with a minimum of 25 years.
- Remy Gordon, another man convicted of the murder, received at least 26 years.
The deadly attack stemmed from a chance encounter between Cody and Gordon in Solihull. Gordon tracked Cody online and targeted him at the Crane nightclub. Surrounded and brutally attacked just before midnight on Boxing Day, Cody was stabbed once in the chest and died at the scene.
Knife crime is reportedly falling in the West Midlands, but cases like this show the fight isn’t over yet.
