Metropolitan Police to Consider Legal Challenge After Dismissal of Commander Overturned
Metropolitan Police Officer Pleads Guilty to Sexual Assault

The Metropolitan Police Service is contemplating a legal challenge following a surprising turn in the case of former Commander Julian Bennett, whose dismissal was recently overturned by the Police Appeals Tribunal (PAT). Bennett, who had been discharged from the service last year for refusing to submit to a drug test, won an appeal on July 26, prompting the tribunal to call for a new hearing.

Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist expressed deep concerns about the tribunal’s decision, highlighting the dismay it may cause among the public and within the ranks of the Metropolitan Police. I am very concerned by this decision and I have no doubt that the public and hardworking colleagues across the Met will be appalled that this case remains unresolved after such a long time,” he stated.

The decision to overturn Bennett’s dismissal has underscored persistent calls from within the Met for reforms to the misconduct process. The Met has been vocal about the need for changes to ensure that senior officers are held to the highest standards of accountability, particularly given their roles as leaders within the force.

“We await the written decision before determining our next steps, but we are actively considering a challenge by way of judicial review,” Twist added, emphasizing that Bennett would not return to duty while the Met evaluates its options.

The case continues to draw attention and could potentially lead to significant legal and procedural outcomes for the Metropolitan Police as they navigate the complexities of internal discipline and public accountability.
