Metropolitan Police Motorcyclist Pleads Not Guilty to Causing Death of 81-Year-Old During Duchess Escort

A Metropolitan Police motorcyclist has pleaded not guilty to causing the death of 81-year-old great-grandmother Helen Holland by careless driving. The incident occurred on 10 May in Earl’s Court, London, when Ms Holland was struck at the junction of West Cromwell Road and Warwick Road while the officer was on duty escorting the Duchess of Edinburgh.

Christopher Harrison, 67, part of the Met’s Special Escort Group, appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court where he confirmed his name and denied the charge of causing death by careless driving. The court’s public gallery was filled with members of Ms. Holland’s family, who reacted with audible surprise at his plea. Ms Holland, a mother of four, sustained serious injuries in the collision and passed away two weeks later.

Case Transferred to Old Bailey Due to Seriousness of Charge

Prosecutor Zoe Martin emphasized that the case’s severity warranted transfer to a higher court, as it approached the threshold for dangerous driving. District Judge Louisa Ciecióra agreed, ruling that the case would be heard at the Central Criminal Court, the Old Bailey, where Harrison’s plea and trial preparation hearing is set for 4 December. Harrison was granted unconditional bail, with Judge Ciecióra instructing him to maintain close contact with his legal representation and report any changes in address.

Tributes and Royal Condolences

Following Ms Holland’s death, Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, extended “heartfelt thoughts and prayers” to Ms Holland’s family, with Buckingham Palace also expressing gratitude to the emergency services for their swift response and pledging to stay informed on the investigation.

Investigation and Charges

The charge against Harrison was brought following a review by the Independent Office for Police Conduct and authorised by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). Rosemary Ainslie, Head of the CPS Special Crime Division, emphasized the importance of a fair trial and urged the public to avoid any commentary that might prejudice the case.

The Met’s Special Escort Group provides armed escorts for the Royal Family, VIPs, and other dignitaries, with officers specially trained for high-security motorcade duties.
