The Metropolitan Police are delighted to announce the appointment of James Deller as the new Chief Officer of the Metropolitan Police Special Constabulary. This appointment comes after a decade of dedicated service by Deller as a special constable.
Extensive Experience in Policing
James Deller’s policing career is marked by significant experience. He has previously served with the Dyfed-Powys and Humberside Police and was also the Chief Officer of the Surrey Police Special Constabulary. Since joining the Met as a special in 2013, he has been instrumental in leading the over 1,400 strong Met Special Constabulary, particularly following the retirement of the former Chief Special Officer, John Conway, last year.
Role and Contribution of Special Constables
Special constables are volunteer police officers who commit at least 16 hours of their free time each month to the service, in addition to their regular jobs. They possess the same policing powers as regular officers and work across various teams in the Met, contributing significantly to local policing and specialist commands.
A Statement from James Deller

It’s an extremely challenging time in policing and so it is critical that we harness and empower our volunteer police officers to use their strengths and skills to deliver on the Commissioner’s mission of More Trust, Less crime and High standards.”
Professional Background
James began his career as a secondary school teacher before moving into learning and development in the public sector, including health and local government. He currently holds a position at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust as the Head of Core Skills and Induction.
