Met Police Officer Jailed After Stealing Dead Woman’s Bank Card

A Metropolitan Police officer has been sentenced to jail after stealing a deceased woman’s bank card and using it for fraudulent online purchases.

Former officer Amelia Lancaster, based at Wimbledon police station, stole the bank card from a hotel guest who had died by suicide. Between 31 October and 16 November 2022, Lancaster used the card to spend £302.51 on Deliveroo and Amazon.

The crime was uncovered by the victim’s brother, who is also a police officer. In a victim impact statement, he expressed deep anguish, saying, “I cannot comprehend how morally bankrupt one must be to steal from the dead. You betrayed everything you stood for.”

In court, family members described Lancaster’s actions as a profound violation that worsened their grief.

Lancaster admitted four counts of fraud by false representation and misconduct in public office. Judge Peter Lodder, KC, condemned her actions as a betrayal of public trust. She was sentenced to jail and dismissed from her position following a gross misconduct hearing.

The Metropolitan Police condemned Lancaster’s behaviour and reiterated their commitment to maintaining integrity within the force.
