A Memorial Book has been introduced jointly by the Scottish Government and National Records of Scotland, offering a space for those who have experienced pregnancy or baby loss before 24 weeks to commemorate their loss with a physical record. This free and optional service aims to address the need expressed by parents to recognize losses that occurred prior to 24 weeks.
Launched during a visit to the baby loss charity, Held In Our Hearts, First Minister Humza Yousaf emphasised the profound impact of losing a baby at any stage of pregnancy. The Memorial Book includes a record of the loss and a commemorative certificate, providing acknowledgment and comfort to those affected by pre-24 week pregnancy or baby loss.
Nicola Welsh, Chief Executive of Held In Our Hearts, welcomed the initiative, highlighting the isolation and pain families experience after losing a much-wanted baby. The Memorial Book allows families to have their little ones’ names added to the National Records of Scotland, offering formal recognition for these brief lives.
Clea Harmer, Chief Executive of Sands and Chair of the Baby Loss Awareness Alliance, expressed hope that the Memorial Book would bring comfort to those affected by pregnancy and baby loss before 24 weeks. The initiative underscores the importance of acknowledging and remembering babies’ lives, regardless of the stage of pregnancy.
The Memorial Book is now open for applications, providing an opportunity for families to create a lasting tribute to their little ones who left too soon. The Scottish Government collaborated with health professionals, Royal Colleges, baby loss charities, and National Records of Scotland to develop this initiative, addressing the unique needs of those who experienced early pregnancy loss.
