Mass Evacuation at Mersea House in Barking After Smell of Burning Triggers High-Rise Emergency Response

Emergency services carried out a mass evacuation at a high-rise residential block in Barking in the early hours of Sunday morning following reports of a burning smell and a fire alarm activation.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) were called to Mersea House on Harts Lane, Ilford at around 1am on Sunday, after residents reported a strong smell of burning coming from flat The building’s automated fire alarm system (AFA) had also been triggered.

As a precaution, the LFB implemented a full high-rise emergency procedure, leading to the mass evacuation of the building to ensure the safety of all residents.

Firefighters are  conducting a thorough investigation of the affected flat and surrounding properties. At this stage, no visible fire was found, and the situation was brought under control. It is understood the incident may have involved a small electrical fault or appliance issue, though the LFB has not yet confirmed the cause.

Crews from multiple fire stations have been called to tthe scene, and all residents were safely accounted for. No injuries were reported.

A source for the London Fire Brigade said:

“We responded swiftly to reports of smoke and a fire alarm sounding at Mersea House. Given the nature of the building, a high-rise response was activated. Crews carried out a full evacuation and a detailed investigation to ensure the safety of all residents.”

Emergency protocols at high-rise buildings have become increasingly stringent following recent tower block incidents in the capital. Residents are being praised for their calm and orderly response during the evacuation.

The London Fire Brigade has reminded residents to regularly check smoke alarms, avoid overloading electrical sockets, and report any signs of burning smells or faulty wiring immediately.
