A section of Market Street in Manchester city centre was cordoned off tonight following a police incident near the Market Street tram stop. Police and paramedics were dispatched to the area, which led to significant disruption in the busy city centre.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing paramedics and police officers attending to a stationary tram at the stop. One end of Market Street, close to Piccadilly Gardens, remained sealed off, with no access for pedestrians.
Pictures from the scene showed a paramedic car, an ambulance, and several police vehicles present. An eyewitness stated that the ambulance left the scene shortly after, followed by the tram, though the cordon remained in place, preventing anyone from passing through the top end of Market Street.
Metrolink confirmed that tram services on the Ashton line had been disrupted due to the police incident. According to an update on their website, “Ashton services will operate between Ashton and Piccadilly Station ONLY. No services are currently operating between Piccadilly Station and Victoria Station. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
Greater Manchester Police have been contacted for comment, but no further details have been provided regarding the nature of the incident. The cordon and police presence are expected to remain in place as the situation develops.
