Off-Duty NYPD Officer Among Five Dead After Manhattan Office Shooting

Overview

Five people, including an off-duty New York City police officer and the gunman, have died following a mass shooting inside a high-rise office building on Park Avenue, Manhattan.

The attack occurred at around 6.30pm local time on Monday (July 28) and sent shockwaves across Midtown as police responded to what they described as a major active shooter incident.

Officer Killed While Protecting Others

Among the victims was Didarul Islam, an off-duty NYPD officer and father-of-two, whose wife is expecting their third child in a matter of days.

Islam was working in the building as part of a paid detail – a program that allows private companies to hire NYPD officers for on-site security – when the suspect opened fire.

“He was protecting New Yorkers from danger when his life was tragically cut short,” the NYPD said in a statement.
“We will forever honor his legacy.”

Shooter Identified as Nevada Man with Mental Health History

The suspected gunman, Shane Devon Tamura, 27, from Nevada, was found dead from what authorities believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Mayor Eric Adams said Tamura had a valid firearm licence in Nevada and a documented history of mental health issues. His motive remains unclear.

He is believed to have travelled cross-country from Las Vegas, stopping in several states before reaching New York.

How the Shooting Unfolded

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that Tamura entered the building with a large rifle, captured on CCTV casually carrying the weapon in one hand.

He opened fire inside the lobby, killing Officer Islam and wounding multiple others, including a female employee, a security guard, and a civilian.

Witnesses described chaos inside the building, with office workers barricading doors and hiding under desks as gunfire rang out.

Tamura took the elevator to the 33rd floor, home to Ruden Building Management, where he fatally shot another person before turning the gun on himself.

Gun Cache Recovered

Tamura had double-parked his vehicle outside the building. A search uncovered a revolver and multiple magazines in the car.

The three other victims have not yet been identified. One person remains in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Mayor and Police Call for Unity

“This is a tragedy not just for the NYPD, but for the entire city,” said Mayor Adams.
“We are mourning a hero whose life was taken senselessly.”

Police have confirmed there are no current threats to public safety and emphasized that the shooting was not terror-related.
