Details of the Crime
During the ordeal, Jonathan hurled homophobic slurs at Gawler, and after the assault, he used the victim’s Bankbank card to purchase alcohol.
Gawler was found dead in his flat in england/hereford/”>Hereford by his brother, who became concerned for his wellbeing. On January 18, he called Jamie’s phone, which was answered by a police officer at wales/Porthporth/”>Porth railway station, where Gawler’s bank cards were also discovered.
Arrest and Sentencing
Jonathan was arrested on January 19 after experiencing a medical episode at the station. He was later charged with murder and pleaded guilty. His sentencing took place at Worcester Crown Court on September 12, 2025.

Following the sentencing, Jamie’s family expressed their gratitude to the family as we try, in our own way, to process the loss of Jamie, our son, brother, uncle and friend to many. Jamie will be forever in our hearts and remembered as the kind, funny and gentle man that he was.”
Police Response
DCI Gareth Lougher welcomed the sentencing, stating, “He will now serve a significant period of time in prison. While it will never bring Jamie back, hopefully, it will provide some closure for his loved ones. I would also like to thank my investigation team for their tireless work in bringing about today’s sentencing.
