Shiney Row, in Tyne & Wear, became the scene of a heartbreaking incident on Tuesday, resulting in the death of 54-year-old Ian Langley in a suspected American Bully XL attack. A 44-year-old, initially arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent, was later re-arrested on suspicion of murder and has been released on bail as Northumbria Police continue their inquiries.

The shocking event unfolded in Maple Terrace, prompting swift action from law enforcement. At the scene, the dog responsible for the attack was shot dead, and a second dog was seized.

The American Bully XL breed, central to this tragedy, has raised concerns leading to a promise from Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to ban the breed by year-end under the Dangerous Dogs Act. This decision follows a series of attacks, and a spokesperson indicated that a “transition period” would precede the ban, with details expected after a consultation on the plan.

Residents of Maple Terrace were urged to stay indoors as police responded to the incident. Det Ch Insp Angela Hudson assured the public that there is no broader threat, emphasising that those involved were “known to each other.”
