Matthew Bevan Jailed for Racist Abuse, Knife Threats and Domestic Violence in Kent

A 36-year-old man from Kent has been jailed for two years and 10 months after a series of violent and abusive incidents, including racist abuse, threats with a knife, and domestic assault, were exposed in court.

Matthew Bevan, of Joseph’s Way, was arrested on Thursday, March 22, 2018, after causing a public disturbance outside a woman’s home in Joseph’s Way, where he was heard shouting racist abuse at a man he believed was inside. The incident was witnessed by members of the public, who promptly reported it to Kent Police.

Pattern of Violence and Abuse

During the subsequent investigation, officers uncovered further historic offences committed by Bevan. These included:

  • Threatening a woman with a knife on Monday, April 24, 2017, following an argument.
  • Assaulting the same woman inside a property on Wednesday, October 25, 2017.

Bevan was charged and later pleaded guilty to threats to kill, assault by beating, and stalking at Canterbury Crown Court on Monday, July 23, 2018.

Police Praise Victim’s Bravery

Investigating officer PC Tracy Lawson said:
“Bevan has shown he is a violent man. While it can be incredibly difficult for people to escape abusive relationships, the victim should be praised for her courage in coming forward.

As a result of her bravery, Bevan will now serve time in prison. Tackling domestic violence is one of Kent Police’s top priorities, and we urge anyone suffering in silence to contact us. We are here to support victims every step of the way.”

Ongoing Commitment to Domestic Abuse Victims

Kent Police reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on racist abuse, domestic violence, and stalking, encouraging victims to report incidents promptly to ensure action is taken and support is available.
