Man Jailed for Life After Vicious Hammer Attack on Woman in South East London

A man has been sentenced to life in prison after launching a brutal attack on a woman with a hammer and threatening her with knives during a “vicious” incident in South East London.

Joel Victorious, aged 51, from Waleran Flats, Southwark, was found guilty of attempted murder following a harrowing domestic assault that took place on October 22, 2023. He was sentenced at the Old Bailey on September 5, 2024.

In the early hours of the morning, police were called to the scene after multiple reports of a “domestic incident” and found the victim collapsed in the street, covered in blood. Upon investigation, it was revealed that Victorious had struck the woman repeatedly on the head with a hammer, before chasing her into the road and threatening her with knives. The woman’s children witnessed the violent assault.

When officers arrived, they discovered the victim had life-threatening injuries and immediately performed emergency CPR. Police also provided life-saving aid to Victorious, who had stabbed himself during what authorities described as a “frenzied incident.”

The victim expressed her deep gratitude for the officers who saved her life and praised their professionalism during the traumatic ordeal. She said, “I would like to express my deepest gratitude to officers at Peckham Police Station for their swift and heroic actions in saving my life. Their professionalism and bravery during an incredibly difficult time will forever be remembered.”

The victim also gave special thanks to DC Simone Kidd, the investigating officer, whose dedication and perseverance helped bring the case to a successful conclusion. Her attention to detail and hard work ensured that justice has been served in the case of the attempted murder against me,” the victim stated.

DC Simone Kidd commended the victim’s bravery throughout the investigation, adding, “I sincerely hope she can now move forward.”

Detective Inspector Andy Kinkead, from the Met’s Central South Unit, praised the officers’ commitment and expertise: “This shocking case demonstrates the dedication and professionalism of the Metropolitan Police Service, from those attending the scene to the detectives who built the case. Officers have continued to provide expert support to the family during this extremely upsetting time.

The case has served as a reminder of the Metropolitan Police’s ongoing efforts to protect the community and ensure justice for victims of violent crimes.
