Man jailed for four years after violent assaults on man, woman and police officer

Detectives have welcomed the four-year sentence given to a man who assaulted two people and one of the police officers who came to their aid.

In the early hours of Saturday 9th September last year, a woman contacted Cleveland Police with concerns for the welfare of a man, however, the man then returned to an address in Yarm and caused a violent disturbance after forcing his way into the property.

The woman stated Jordan Kelly (23) had assaulted her, was fighting with others in the address and had a knife.

When police arrived at the scene and attempted to remove Kelly from the address, he became aggressive towards the officers pushing one against the wall and trying to kick him.

The group of people who were present also told police Kelly had held them, hostage, while threatening them with a knife, causing a bite mark and an eye injury to a man and making threats to kill one of the women and the man – as well as himself.

Kelly from Seamer in North Yorkshire was sentenced at Teesside Crown Court at the end of March.

Temporary Detective Constable Samantha Finlayson of Cleveland Police’s Domestic Abuse Unit said: “This was a case involving an unprovoked attack on multiple victims and was undoubtedly terrifying for them and for the officers who came to help them.

“The victims had the strength and courage to tell police exactly what had happened and we are grateful for this.

“The extreme violence which Kelly used to cause significant injuries could not go unchecked by the Domestic Abuse Unit; such incidents will always be investigated, and we will always seek to achieve justice for victims.

“The sentence reflects the gravity of the crimes which Kelly committed.”

We would urge any victim of domestic abuse in any form, no matter when it has occurred, to come forward and report it to Cleveland Police on 101.
