A devastating crash on the M25 has resulted in charges against a man from London, following the tragic deaths of two individuals, including Zoe Hawes from Canvey Island in Essex.

Zoe Hawes, who was en route to celebrate her 40th birthday on holiday, lost her life in the early hours of February 4 between junctions 22 and 21A. Another man, travelling in a separate vehicle, also perished in the incident.

Barancan Nurcin, 22, of High Road in Tottenham, was charged on Tuesday (February 20) with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and four counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

The collision occurred at approximately 4 am between junctions 22 (London Colney) and 21A (North Orbital Road/St Albans) involving four vehicles: a white Citroen Dispatch van, a silver DFSK 580 Glory, a silver Skoda Superb, and a black Peugeot 5008.

Hertfordshire Police disclosed that officers in a marked vehicle were pursuing the van shortly before the collision, but they promptly discontinued the pursuit due to the perceived high risk.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct is now investigating the incident, as Essex Police conducts a criminal investigation into the collision.

Zoe’s family, grief-stricken by the loss of their beloved matriarch, have shared heartfelt tributes, describing her as a “wonderful mummy and nanna” who was the cornerstone of their family.

In a statement, they expressed their profound sorrow, describing Zoe as the heart of their blended family, a cherished mother, stepmother, sister, aunt, and loving grandmother. They emphasized her pivotal role in their lives and her enduring impact on those around her.

As they grapple with their immeasurable loss, they reminisced about Zoe’s vibrant personality and the profound void her absence has left in their lives, pledging eternal love and remembrance.

Authorities urge anyone with information regarding the incident to step forward, either by dialling 999 or emailing Essex Police at [email protected], as investigations into the tragic crash continue.
