Man Charged in Connection with Bus Fire During Leeds Disorder
Leeds left to burn for hours as riot police are driven out and only returned to restore order at 1am after a patrol car is tipped over and bus torched on a night of shame

A man has been charged in connection with the violent disorder that erupted in the Harehills suburb of Leeds earlier this week. The disturbance, which began at around 5pm on Thursday, saw a police car flipped over and a bus set alight, continuing into the early hours of Friday.

Iustin Dobre, 37, of Clifton Mount, Harehills, has been charged with violent disorder and arson reckless as to endanger life in relation to the torching of the bus, West Yorkshire Police said. He has been remanded in custody and will appear at Leeds Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Additionally, officers have arrested five more individuals on suspicion of violent disorder. These suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue. Four other individuals initially arrested in connection with Thursday’s events have been bailed pending further investigation.

The disorder reportedly began as police responded to reports of social workers facing hostility while handling a child protection issue in the area. Officers were attacked and had to escort social care staff to safety. Subsequently, people began damaging vehicles and setting fires, according to Assistant Chief Constable Pat Twiggs.

On Friday evening, a vigil held in Harehills passed off peacefully, police said. A woman was arrested during the event on suspicion of a public order offence but was later released after receiving a conditional caution.

West Yorkshire Police have assured the public of an increased police presence in the area over the coming days to maintain order and ensure safety.

Anyone with information about the disorder, including CCTV footage, is urged to contact West Yorkshire Police to assist with the ongoing investigation.
