HAMMER ATTACK Man arrested after setting fire and smashing screens with hammer at Milan Malpensa Airport

Panic broke out at Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) after a man stormed into Terminal 1 armed with a hammer, smashing check-in desk screens and setting a rubbish bin on fire.

The incident unfolded at around 10.30am in the departure area, sending passengers fleeing as black smoke filled parts of the terminal. Video footage shared on social media showed travellers screaming and rushing to evacuate as the man attacked airport fixtures.

Images from inside the airport showed thick smoke rising as firefighters rushed in to extinguish the flames.

The Airport Association for the Lombardy region confirmed the man had been arrested and the situation was quickly brought under control. Police have not yet disclosed a motive.

Disruption to flights

Authorities temporarily closed parts of the terminal during the emergency response. SEA Milan Airports warned of possible delays and cancellations due to the evacuation and fire damage.

“Due to the closure of some areas and evacuation of premises, possible delays and cancellations for departures from the airport,” the airport said in a statement on X.

No passenger injuries reported

Italian outlet La Stampa reported the suspect appeared to direct his anger primarily at airport property, and not directly at staff or passengers. No serious injuries were reported, though several employees required medical checks.

The terminal remains partially closed while crews clear smoke and assess fire damage.
