Digital Driving Licences Set for Summer Launch
Up to 50 million UK drivers will soon have access to a digital driving licence, as the government prepares to launch the GOV.UK Wallet app this summer. The update is part of a broader plan to modernise public services and reduce reliance on physical documents.
While traditional plastic photocard licences will remain valid, drivers will now be able to carry a digital version on their smartphones for use in ID checks, car rentals, and even age verification when buying alcohol.
When Will the Digital Licence Be Available?
The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) confirmed the app’s release timeline:
- Summer 2025: GOV.UK Wallet app launches with its first feature—a digital Veteran card
- Later in 2025: Digital driving licences to be rolled out, in collaboration with the DVLA
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander called the move a “game changer” and part of a plan to save the government up to £45 billion through digital transformation.
Is It Mandatory?
No. DSIT has stressed that digital licences are not mandatory. Drivers can continue using their existing physical cards if preferred. The digital version is being introduced as a convenient option, not a requirement.
How to Apply for a Digital Driving Licence
- Download the GOV.UK Wallet app from the official Apple App Store or Google Play
- Verify your identity via facial recognition
- Upload supporting documents (e.g., driving licence photo)
- Wait for approval—your digital licence will appear within the app
Once approved, the app will let users view driving records, renewal dates, and penalty points in real time.
Security and Privacy Concerns Addressed
With rising digital fraud, some have raised concerns about data protection. DSIT has responded by ensuring:
- Two-factor authentication (like banking apps)
- Remote deactivation if a phone is lost or stolen
- No forced adoption—the app is opt-in only
Privacy campaigners remain cautious, especially as the app is expected to hold other sensitive documents in the future, such as Blue Badges, DBS checks, and birth certificates.
Europe Moving in Parallel
The EU is also developing a continent-wide digital driving licence, targeting over 440 million drivers. This initiative could eventually support cross-border licence verification, although the UK’s system is being developed independently post-Brexit.
Public Awareness Remains Low
A poll by Regtransfers found that only 43% of drivers are aware of the coming change. Officials plan to launch a wider public information campaign to raise awareness and help Brits prepare before full implementation.
In Summary
- Launch: Summer 2025 (initial rollout with digital Veteran card)
- Driver Access: Optional, not mandatory
- How to Apply: Through the GOV.UK Wallet app
- Benefits: Faster ID checks, reduced paper reliance
- Concerns: Privacy, smartphone access, battery reliance
