Three people were injured in a serious crash on the M3 motorway after a car was reported driving the wrong way between Winchester and Basingstoke. The two-vehicle collision occurred around 7 pm on Saturday between Junction 9 at Winchester and Junction 8 at the A303 near Basingstoke.
The crash prompted an extensive emergency response, with the M3 closed in both directions to allow multiple ambulances and fire crews from Eastleigh, Winchester, Basingstoke, and Redbridge to attend. One individual had to be extracted from a vehicle by firefighters due to the severity of the collision.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary confirmed, “We were called at 7 pm to a report of a collision involving two cars on the M3 northbound. It was reported one of the vehicles had been travelling in the wrong direction. The driver of this vehicle suffered serious injuries and is receiving treatment in hospital.”
The two occupants of the other vehicle sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene. The M3 remained closed for several hours, with traffic disruptions lasting into the early hours of Sunday morning as authorities worked to clear the scene and investigate the incident.
