Fuel Tank Ruptured – Road Surface Damaged

According to National Highways, the HGV’s fuel tank split open, spilling diesel across all lanes and causing significant damage to both the road surface and central barriers.

Essex Police and emergency responders were dispatched to the scene, and fire and ambulance crews remain in attendance. A woman was taken to Basildon University Hospital with a minor injury, confirmed the East of England Ambulance Service.

Bridge Closed for Repairs – Long Delays Remain

A spokesperson for Essex Police stated:

“We expect the Dartford Crossing to remain closed throughout this afternoon and into the evening following the collision.

Repairs to the road surface and barriers are vital to maintain the safety of the bridge for all road users.

We thank drivers for their ongoing patience and urge them to check before travelling.”

Congestion Update

As of 5:00pm:

  • M25 clockwise: 8 miles of congestion between J27 (M11 interchange) and J31
  • M25 anticlockwise: 7 miles of queues from J4 (Orpington) to J1A
  • Surrounding A13 and A2 routes are experiencing heavier than normal traffic

Travel Advice

Drivers are advised to:

  • Avoid the QE2 bridge and seek alternative crossings (Blackwall Tunnel, Woolwich Ferry)
  • Check live traffic updates via National Highways or local radio
  • Allow extra time for evening travel or delay journeys if possible

The Dartford Crossing is a critical link for freight and commuters between Essex and Kent, and its closure continues to cause major disruption across the southeast road network.

Further updates will be issued as repair work progresses and reopening times are confirmed.
