M2 Bridge Repair Works to Cause Significant Closures from 29 August to 27 September 2024

Motorists travelling on the M2 motorway between junctions 5 and 7 are set to face major disruptions throughout September as essential bridge repair works are carried out. The repairs, scheduled between 29 August and 27 September 2024, will focus on replacing expansion joints, waterproofing, and resurfacing to maintain the structural integrity of the bridges.

To safely complete the work, there will be a series of overnight and weekend closures of the M2, causing significant delays for travellers. Full details of the closures are as follows:

  • Thursday, 29 August: One-night closure of the eastbound carriageway between junctions 5 and 7 from 8pm to 6am.
  • Friday, 6 September to Monday, 9 September: Full weekend closure of the eastbound carriageway from 8pm Friday to 6am Monday.
  • Friday, 13 September to Monday, 16 September: Full weekend closure of the westbound carriageway between junctions 7 and 5 from 8pm Friday to 6am Monday.
  • Monday, 16 September: Four-night closure of the westbound carriageway from 8pm to 6am.
  • Monday, 23 September: Five-night closure of the eastbound carriageway from 8pm to 6am.

Potential Weekend Closures:

  • 20 September weekend for the eastbound carriageway, and
  • 27 September weekend for the westbound carriageway are also scheduled in case of delays or additional work requirements.

Diversions will be in place via the A249, M20, A20, A2, and back to the M2 for eastbound closures. For westbound closures, the diversion will follow the same route but in reverse. Motorists are urged to avoid the A251, where utility works are expected to take place in September.

Drivers are encouraged to check for live updates on the latest closures and diversions via Traffic England and the National Highwaystravel alerts. Due to potential weather-related changes, the public is advised to plan ahead for alternative routes and to allow extra time for travel.
