Detectives have charged a lorry driver following a tragic smash on the M62 that claimed the lives of two Ryanair pilots. The fatal collision happened in the early hours on Thursday, 11 July 2024.
Fatal Collision on M62 Westbound
At around 5.31am, police rushed to the scene after a crash involving two lorries and a taxi on the westbound carriageway between junctions 8 and 7. The taxi was carrying passengers Matt Greenhalgh, 28, and Jamie Fernandes, 24 — both Ryanair pilots.
“Sadly, Matt Greenhalgh and Jamie Fernandes died at the scene. Their families are continuing to be supported by specialist officers,” Cheshire Police confirmed.
The taxi driver sustained serious injuries but survived.
Man from Wirral Faces Dangerous Driving Charges
Anthony Burns, 63, from Headington Road, Upton, Wirral, has been summonsed to appear at Warrington Magistrates on 25 November. He faces charges of two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and one count of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
