London Overground Line Renamed “Mildmay” in Tribute to Historic Hospital

London’s Overground network has welcomed a new addition to its roster of routes, with the unveiling of the “Mildmay” line. Stretching from Richmond in the southwest to Stratford in the east, this line has been given its own identity and distinctive blue parallel lines on TfL maps, marking it as one of six newly named routes designed to enhance navigation across the capital.

The decision to honour the Mildmay name holds deep significance, rooted in the rich history of Mildmay Mission Hospital. Situated near Shoreditch, this charitable institution has served as a beacon of care and compassion for over a century. With just 28 inpatient rooms, Mildmay Hospital played a pivotal role in providing critical care during the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1980s, earning its place as one of London’s most revered medical facilities.

The origins of Mildmay Mission trace back to the mid-19th century when deaconesses from St Jude’s church in Mildmay Grove ventured into the East End’s impoverished neighbourhoods to aid those affected by cholera outbreaks. This legacy of selfless service continues to resonate today, embodied in the Mildmay Overground line, which carries passengers on a journey through London’s diverse communities, mirroring the hospital’s historic outreach efforts.

Established in a disused warehouse in 1877, Mildmay Medical Mission was born out of a commitment to provide healthcare to those in need, particularly in areas devastated by disease and poverty. Over the years, the hospital evolved, adapting to the changing landscape of healthcare and societal needs. By 1988, Mildmay became Europe’s first hospice dedicated to patients with HIV/AIDS, offering not only medical care but also solace and support during a time of profound crisis.

Diana, Princess of Wales, played a significant role in elevating Mildmay’s profile, making numerous visits to the hospice and advocating for compassionate care for those affected by HIV/AIDS. Her unwavering support underscored the hospital’s mission to provide holistic care, addressing not only physical ailments but also emotional and spiritual well-being.

Today, Mildmay Mission Hospital remains at the forefront of HIV care, delivering specialized services to individuals with complex health conditions. Geoff Coleman, CEO of Mildmay Mission Hospital, reflects on the symbolic significance of the newly christened Mildmay line, describing it as more than just a railway route. For Coleman, the Mildmay line represents a journey of acceptance, love, and belonging—a testament to the enduring legacy of Mildmay Mission Hospital in London’s collective consciousness.
