London has recorded more than 140 gun crime incidents over the past year, with a total of 145 firearms offences and eight gun-related murders since March 2023. Despite these figures, the Metropolitan Police have reported significant progress in reducing gun crime.

Firearms incidents have decreased from 196 in 2022/23 to 145 in 2023/24. Gun-related murders have also been reduced from 12 to eight over the last three years. The Met’s specialist detectives utilize data, forensics, and technology to locate illegal guns and apprehend the criminals involved.
Targeted Operations and Success Stories
In several London boroughs, targeted operations have led to significant reductions in gun crime. Notably, Harrow, Brent, and Barnet have not recorded a single gun-related murder since 2020, compared to at least one fatal shooting each year from 2014 to 2020. Similarly, Lambeth and Southwark have seen a 44 per cent reduction in gun crimes over the past year.

Case Highlight: Tyrese Miller
One of the tragic victims of gun crime was 22-year-old Tyrese Miller, who was shot dead in Croydon last year in a case of mistaken identity. A man has since been convicted for manslaughter, and two others for possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.
Tyrese’s mother, Jackie Taylor, expressed her grief: “I worry that if this can happen to Tyrese, it can happen to anyone. Once you met Tyrese, you never forgot him. He was loved. He was the centre of our family. No mother should have to bury their son like I have.”
