Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has condemned the “appalling” events in Liverpool city centre, after a car ploughed into a crowd of pedestrians during Liverpool FC’s Premier League title parade on Monday evening.
The incident occurred around 6:00pm on Water Street, as thousands gathered to celebrate the Reds’ historic title win.

In a statement shared this evening, Starmer said:
“The scenes in Liverpool are appalling – my thoughts are with all those injured or affected.
I want to thank the police and emergency services for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident.
I’m being kept updated on developments and ask that we give the police the space they need to investigate.”

Natasha Rinaldi, speaking to Sky News, described the terrifying moment from a friend’s flat above the parade:
“We heard screams… then looked out the window and saw the car had run over people.
People tried to stop the car, knocking on windows, shouting at the driver. It was chaos.
The police arrived quickly and blocked the scene. Ambulances came soon after.”

Merseyside Police issued a statement:
“We were contacted just after 6pm following reports a car had been in collision with a number of pedestrians.
The car stopped at the scene and a male has been detained. Emergency services are in attendance.”
North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) added:

Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible.”
