Emergency services raced to the scene of a dramatic fire in Killingworth this afternoon after a static caravan caught fire, sending thick plumes of smoke into the air and sparking initial fears of an explosion.

The incident unfolded around 2pm on Garth Twenty Seven, a residential street in North Tyneside, following what a nearby resident described as a “big bang.”

Over 20 emergency calls were made to Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, prompting the dispatch of three fire appliances from Byker and Gosforth community fire stations.

No Explosion, But Major Fire Damage Confirmed

Initial speculation suggested a possible explosion, but the fire service later confirmed there was no blast—just a significant fire that originated in a static caravan and spread rapidly to an adjacent terraced property and nearby tree.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said:
“The source of the fire was a static caravan that has since spread to the adjacent property. No persons are involved.”

Photos from the scene show charred debris, burnt fencing, and damaged brickwork. Firefighters in breathing apparatus were seen tackling the blaze with hose reels and dealing with smouldering areas well after the main flames were extinguished.

Police and Fire Crews Respond Swiftly

Northumbria Police confirmed they were alerted at 2.40pm by the fire service and are working alongside fire crews. They urged the public to avoid the area while the incident was ongoing.

A police spokesperson added: “Emergency services remain in attendance at the scene.”

The North East Ambulance Service confirmed it was not called to the scene, reinforcing that no injuries have been reported.

Witnesses Describe ‘Big Bang’ and Aftermath

One local resident said:

“I was at home and heard a big bang. At first, I didn’t think much of it, but then the fire engines came flying past. I walked up the street and the place was totally black—there’s been a lot of damage.”

Firefighters had initially left the scene by late afternoon but returned shortly after due to a nearby tree showing signs of reignition, underlining the severity of the incident.
