Just Stop Oil Protests: 44 Charged With Offences, National Gallery Painting Vandalised

In the wake of the recent protests by Just Stop Oil activists, a total of 44 individuals have been charged with various offences. The arrests were made by officers on Monday, 6 November, resulting in charges for the activists involved. Among those charged, Harrison Donnelly, 20, of Sillitoe Way, Nottingham, and Hanan Ameur, 22, of Hornsey Road, Islington, were charged with criminal damage after vandalising the protective glass of a painting at the National Gallery.

Although the historic painting sustained minimal damage, it is currently undergoing conservation treatment to restore its original condition. The remaining 42 activists were charged with obstruction of the highway due to their involvement in two slow marches along Whitehall.

Out of the 44 individuals charged, 20 have been remanded in custody, while the other 24 have been released on bail with certain conditions. The protests led to significant disruptions in the area, prompting swift action from law enforcement. During the first slow march, officers made 79 arrests in just 18 minutes to clear Whitehall. A further 25 arrests were made during the second slow march.

The recent charges are part of a larger trend since the start of Just Stop Oil’s autumn action on Monday, 30 October. Since then, a total of 219 arrests have been made, with 98 activists being charged for their involvement in the protests. The ongoing demonstrations have sparked widespread debate and discussions surrounding environmental concerns and the impact of oil industries on the planet.
