BanktheFood is encouraging people to download the app, which sends donors a list of urgently needed items from their local food bank when they arrive at the supermarket. Shoppers can then add an item to their cart and donate it at a nearby donation centre.
There are over 2,000 food banks in the UK, but they rely heavily on notice boards in supermarkets and impromptu social media posts to communicate their needs. These quickly become obsolete and fail to reach those who are willing to assist. The BanktheFood app tells donors exactly what foodbanks need right when they walk into the supermarket, making donating more effective and reducing waste and the need for expensive storage.
“I was shocked to hear how many food banks there are in the UK and how much pressure they are under,” Joe Lycett says. Like many of us, I try to help but often feel like I’m winging it in the supermarket. BanktheFood is a truly brilliant idea that will hopefully assist thousands of food banks in the UK in receiving the supplies they require when they require them. I’m honoured to stand by them.”
“We are incredibly grateful to Joe for supporting us and narrating our new mission film,” said Emma Spring, CEO of BanktheFood. It’s no secret that food banks are in desperate need of donations to help the community. However, generous donors frequently unintentionally donate the same items. BanktheFood is a non-profit organisation dedicated to ensuring that food banks have the right balance of what they need, when they need it. The BanktheFood app ensures that donations are more than just baked beans. “We hope that as many people as possible use the app.”
