Improvements Underway for M2 Junction 5
Improvements Underway for M2 Junction 5

Major improvements are underway at the M2 junction 5 in Kent, aiming to enhance slip roads and junction approaches. This significant project, initiated in autumn 2021, is expected to continue until 2025 and carries an estimated cost ranging between £50 million and £100 million.

The focus of these improvements is on enhancing the Church Hill crossover, which has recently been opened for southbound A249 traffic to access Stockbury. However, it’s important to note that the current usage of the crossover does not permit traffic to perform U-turns to join the northbound A249. Drivers are encouraged to proceed on the southbound carriageway to the next suitable turning location.

In the latest update regarding the project, authorities have announced overnight closures for the A249 southbound in January 2024. This temporary closure is necessitated by preparation work alongside the A249, south of the Stockbury Roundabout. The purpose of this work is to facilitate the construction of a new link road from South Green Lane to the roundabout. The closure is scheduled for Wednesday, January 17, and Thursday, January 18, from 10:30 pm to 5 am on each night.

During the closure, a diversion will be implemented, guiding traffic via the M2, A229, M20, and A249. For non-motorway traffic, an alternative route will be provided, utilizing the A249, A2, A229, and A249.

These improvements to the M2 junction 5 are expected to significantly enhance traffic flow, safety, and accessibility in the area, benefitting commuters and travellers alike. The project is a testament to ongoing efforts to improve the road infrastructure in the region, ensuring smoother journeys for all road users.

As the project progresses, commuters are advised to stay updated on any developments and road closures that may affect their travel plans. Authorities are committed to minimizing disruptions while carrying out these essential improvements
