A murder investigation has been launched following the disappearance of a woman from Ilford, with a man known to her now charged and in custody.
Yajaira Castro Mendez, 46, was reported missing to police on Saturday, 31 May, after she failed to return home and had not been heard from since the morning of Thursday, 29 May.
Despite extensive searches by officers, her whereabouts remain unknown, and detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command have now taken over the investigation.
Who Was Yajaira Castro Mendez?
Yajaira, a Colombian national living in the UK, was last seen leaving her home in Ilford. She has not made contact with her family or friends since, raising immediate concerns for her welfare.
Following extensive enquiries, evidence has led police to believe she may have come to harm.
Man Charged with Murder
A man known to Yajaira has been arrested and charged with her murder. He appeared in court today. Police have confirmed they are not looking for any other suspects at this time.

Chief Superintendent Jason Stewart, head of policing in Camden, said:
“Officers have been working around the clock to find Yajaira. Sadly, further enquiries led us to believe she has come to harm. Her family is being supported by specialist officers and kept informed of all developments.”
“There are active crime scenes in place across Camden and Lambeth, and we thank the public for their patience. We understand the concern this may cause, but please be reassured that a suspect is in custody and we are not seeking anyone else at this time.”
