Huge Fire at St Michael’s Hospital Forces Evacuation of Patients Including Pregnant Women

St Michael’s Hospital in Bristol was evacuated this afternoon after a large fire broke out on the premises, sending thick black smoke across the city centre. Pregnant women were among those temporarily moved to safety.

 Fire Erupts on Southwell Street

The fire broke out at approximately 4:30pm on Thursday, prompting a swift response from Avon Fire and Rescue Service and Avon and Somerset Police.

Multiple fire crews were seen battling flames on the roof of the hospital building, with dramatic images showing dense smoke visible as far as Brislington.

“Firefighters are currently responding to the fire. We encourage people to avoid the area while we deal with the incident,” said a spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue.

Evacuation and Reopening

Hospital staff partially evacuated the building, including the delivery suite, with no injuries reported.
Professor Stuart Walker, Managing Director at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW), confirmed the fire has since been safely extinguished.

“Thank you to our amazing staff who worked closely with the fire service to partially evacuate the hospital,” he said.
“The hospital, including the delivery suite, has now reopened to women who need to access our services.”

Patients with appointments scheduled for tomorrow are advised to attend as planned.

Roads Closed, Investigation Ongoing

St Michael’s Hill remains closed in both directions between Tyndall Avenue and Horfield Road, with police urging the public to stay clear of the area.

“Police are supporting Avon Fire & Rescue colleagues… St Michael’s Hill is closed to vehicles and pedestrians,” said Avon and Somerset Police in a statement.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
