A devastating fire broke out this afternoon at a Grade II listed building in Brightlingsea, causing significant damage to the historic property and a neighbouring home. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the blaze was accidental in origin.

The fire, which initially began as a small incident, escalated rapidly due to a failed external gas pipe and the building’s timber-framed structure, which allowed the flames to spread with alarming speed.

Despite the challenges, firefighters acted swiftly and bravely to protect as much of the site as possible. Crews were praised for their efforts in salvaging valuable artefacts and historical items from the building, which holds deep cultural and historical significance for the local community.

A spokesperson for Essex Fire and Rescue Service said:

“We know this has been a really difficult incident for the local community. As a Grade II listed building, it holds a lot of history and a special place in the town.
Our crews worked incredibly hard to save artefacts and stop the fire from spreading further. Unfortunately, both this building and the house next door have suffered significant fire damage.”

Local residents gathered nearby, watching with concern as firefighters brought the flames under control. No injuries have been reported.

Investigators have since concluded that the cause of the fire was accidental, with no foul play suspected.

Community leaders and residents have expressed sadness at the loss but gratitude to the emergency services for their fast response and protection of nearby properties.
