A courageous young social worker, who played a vital role in bringing a grooming gang to justice, has tragically died in a horrific car crash involving a souped-up BMW.
Tragic Crash on Nottinghamshire Roads
Sarah Fensom, 33, suffered severe neck and spine injuries after a modified BMW lost control while attempting to overtake a queue of cars on the A614 in Farnsfield, Nottinghamshire on September 12, 2023. Her Audi flipped onto its roof during the smash.
After three days in hospital, Sarah sadly passed away, leaving her devastated family to pay tribute to their “amazing” daughter and “proud” woman.
BMW Driver Jailed for Careless Driving
Lee Horsley, 31, the BMW driver, was found guilty at Nottingham Crown Court of causing Sarah’s death through careless driving. The car’s engine had been boosted to 397 brake horsepower, making it difficult to control—especially on the wet road.
“Sarah was a daughter that every parent would have been proud of,”
Judge Michael Auty KC quoted from Sarah’s father’s impact statement. “In those simple 12 words, Mr Fensom captures the life and value of a beautiful and beloved daughter he won’t see again.”
The judge added, “Tragedy and incalculable human suffering can arise from a moment’s inattention or a poor decision. I do not regard you as an inherently dangerous individual. On that day you made a dreadful error of judgement.”
Horsley was sentenced to 15 months in jail and banned from driving for three years.
Community Mourns ‘Amazing’ Woman
Witnesses described the BMW as “snaking” between lanes before crashing head-on into Sarah’s Audi. Though Sarah was initially conscious after the crash, bystanders were unable to save her from the overturned vehicle.
Sarah’s family and friends remember her as a committed social worker who made a real difference, helping to put dangerous criminals behind bars and protecting vulnerable lives.
This heartbreaking loss highlights how a split-second decision on the road can destroy lives.
