Heroic Police Officers Nominated for Bravery Award after Saving Lives in Hounslow Fire

A group of courageous police officers, who demonstrated extraordinary bravery in the face of danger, have been nominated for the prestigious National Police Bravery Awards 2024 for their heroic efforts in rescuing almost 100 residents from a burning block of flats.

PC Andrew Thompson and PC Jordan Watson, while on mobile patrol in Hounslow on 7 September 2023, spotted a significant fire engulfing the top floor of a flat. Without hesitation, PC Watson swiftly alerted the control room and summoned assistance from the London Ambulance Service.

Joined by PC George Ewart and another unnamed officer, the quartet sprang into action, rushing into the blazing building with complete disregard for their own safety. In a display of remarkable teamwork, they divided into pairs and meticulously evacuated the residents while providing comfort and reassurance to the terrified occupants.

Despite the intense heat and smoke, the officers remained undeterred, diligently documenting the flats they couldn’t reach, aiding the London Fire Brigade in their firefighting efforts upon arrival. PC Thompson and PC Watson managed to pinpoint the source of the fire, ensuring swift action from the fire brigade.

Their collective efforts resulted in the safe evacuation of over 90 residents, with the officers only exiting the building upon the orders of the London Fire Brigade. Even after the evacuation, they continued to assist, identifying those in need of medical attention and supporting the local authority in caring for the displaced residents.

Metropolitan Police Federation Chair Rick Prior hailed the officers‘ selflessness, stating that their quick thinking and decisive action undoubtedly prevented a potentially devastating outcome. Superintendent Phil Taylor echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the officers’ bravery and swift response were instrumental in averting a more significant tragedy.

The nomination of these officers for the Police Bravery Awards is a testament to their exceptional courage and dedication to duty, reflecting the highest standards of service within the Metropolitan Police Service.

As their nomination is celebrated, the heroic actions of PC Thompson, PC Watson, PC Ewart, and their unnamed colleague serve as a poignant reminder of the selfless sacrifices made by police officers in safeguarding their communities.
