A hero police dog named Dixie has been hailed for her crucial role in tracking down a stash of drugs following a dramatic foot chase through Brighton, during which an officer was assaulted.
The incident unfolded at 10pm on Friday, 25 April, when Sussex Police’s Tactical Firearms Unit (TFU), on plain-clothes patrol in the Dyke Road area, spotted a man acting suspiciously while using a taxi.
When officers attempted to question him, the suspect lashed out, assaulting an officer, before making a run for it.
Taxi, Takedown, and a Trail of Drugs
In a quick-thinking manoeuvre, a second officer flagged down a passing taxi and used it to get ahead of the fleeing man, catching and detaining him moments later on Compton Road.
Meanwhile, PD Dixie, a German Shepherd from the force’s Dogs Unit, followed the suspect’s route and sniffed out a discarded bag in nearby The Drove. Inside were multiple deal bags suspected to contain Class A drugs.
A search of the man’s home later uncovered more drugs and a quantity of cash, now seized as part of the continuing investigation.
Praise for Fast-Thinking Police Team
Inspector Rob Hart, of the Tactical Firearms Unit, said:
“This incident is a shining example of our officers’ professionalism and quick thinking. PD Dixie and her handler played a key role in recovering vital evidence, and the teamwork shown by our units helped ensure the suspect didn’t escape justice.”
