A significant search operation is currently underway in Porthcawl after reports of a person in the water were received just before 6 pm on Tuesday.
Emergency services swiftly responded to the alarm, with coastguard rescue teams from Porthcawl, Port Talbot, and Llantwit Major joining forces in the operation. In addition to ground teams, both the police helicopter and coastguard helicopter have been deployed to assist in the search. The efforts have further been supported by a lifeboat from Mumbles.
An HM Coastguard spokesperson stated: “HM Coastguard is coordinating the response to a report of a person in the water at Porthcawl. The alarm was raised at around 5.55 pm on January 23.”

Live updates reveal a heightened awareness of the situation, with the RNLI issuing a warning to the public regarding coastal areas during Storm Jocelyn. The charity emphasized the need for extreme caution, particularly in exposed cliff areas, seafronts, and piers, due to the strong gusts of wind and heavy rain associated with the storm.
Tim Doran, RNLI National Water Safety Partner, urged those planning to visit the coast to stay a safe distance from the water, considering the risk posed by the adverse weather conditions. He emphasized the dangers of cold water shock, especially when water temperatures are below 15°C, and encouraged individuals to follow the “Float to Live” technique if they find themselves unexpectedly in the water.
The RNLI’s safety advice includes staying well back from stormy seas and cliff edges, checking weather forecasts and tide times before heading out, and carrying a phone.
Footage posted on social media depicts a significant emergency service presence at the seafront, with helicopters overhead, police and lifeboat crews near the shore, and numerous police vehicles with flashing blue lights.
The search operation continues, and further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
