RAMPAGE Heathfield Man Sentenced After Brutal Assault Leaves Woman with Broken Nose

 

A man from Heathfield has faced justice after a vicious attack left a woman seriously injured. The assault caused a broken nose, damaged teeth, and significant facial trauma.

Violent Incident in Cross in Hand

On 15 July 2023, police were called to a property in Cross in Hand, Heathfield following reports that a man had punched a woman in the face. The attack also caused damage inside the victim’s home.

William Bennett, 35, of Heathfield Road, Five Ashes, was promptly arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm.

Multiple Charges for Bennett

After a detailed investigation, Bennett was charged on 4 July 2024 with a string of offences including:

  • Three counts of assault
  • Two counts of intentional strangulation
  • Two counts of criminal damage
  • One count of controlling and coercive behaviour

Bennett initially pleaded not guilty but later admitted to one count of criminal damage during his trial on 4 August. He was eventually found guilty of causing actual bodily harm.

Sentenced at Hove Crown Court

On 10 October at Hove Crown Court, Bennett received:

  • An 18-month prison sentence, suspended for two years
  • A 10-year restraining order protecting the victim
  • Mandatory rehabilitative activities
  • A £3,000 fine

Police React to the Verdict

“No one should ever have to experience violence. Together we worked diligently to gather evidence, secure charges, and bring the case before the court while providing ongoing support to the victim throughout,” said PC Caden Miles, who led the investigation.

“We welcome the positive outcome and hope it brings the victim a sense of closure. We are committed to investigating every report of violence with diligence and determination, supporting victims and holding offenders to account wherever possible.”
