Elderly Man Dies After Being Hit by Taxi in Handsworth – Police Launch Appeal

Police have launched an urgent appeal for witnesses and dashcam footage after an 80-year-old man tragically died following a collision involving a taxi in Handsworth, Birmingham.

The incident occurred at around 5.25pm on Wednesday, 2 July, on St James Road, when the victim – who was seated on a wall outside a church – was struck by a grey or silver Volkswagen Touran taxi that was attempting a U-turn.

The man suffered serious leg injuries and was taken to hospital, but his condition deteriorated. He sadly passed away on Friday 4 July.

Police Appeal for Second Vehicle and Dashcam Footage

West Midlands Police say they are supporting the man’s family during this difficult time and confirm that the taxi driver is cooperating with investigators.

Sergeant Richard Evans, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, issued a direct appeal:

“We would appeal for witnesses or anyone who may have any dashcam footage of the incident to come forward.

“We would particularly like to trace the owner of a second vehicle which pulled into St James Road and may have seen the taxi – a grey, silver VW Touran – conducting a U-turn in front of them.”
