Half a Tonne of Cocaine Seized from Rubber Dinghy on Sussex Beach, Five Men Arrested

Around £15 million worth of cocaine has been discovered in a rubber dinghy on a beach in Selsey, West Sussex. The significant drug haul, weighing approximately half a tonne, was recovered from a rigid-hulled inflatable boat (RHIB) on Monday, August 19.

Arrests Made in Connection with the Seizure

Sussex Police made swift arrests in connection with the discovery, detaining five men in the Portsmouth area on the same day. The men were taken into custody on suspicion of drug offences and were subsequently interviewed by National Crime Agency (NCA) officers on Tuesday, August 20.

Following the interviews, the suspects were released on bail as investigations continue.

Ongoing Investigation by the NCA

The National Crime Agency has taken the lead in the investigation into the 500-kilogram cocaine haul. A spokesperson for the NCA confirmed that inquiries are ongoing, stating, “On Monday, August 19, five men were arrested by Sussex Police officers in the Portsmouth area on suspicion of drug offences following the discovery of 500 kilos of cocaine in a Rigid-Hulled Inflatable Boat (RHIB) on a beach in Selsey, Sussex. The investigation is now being led by the NCA.

Authorities have not yet released details on the suspects or any further developments in the case, but the seizure of such a large quantity of drugs highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in combating organized crime along the UK’s coastline.

Public Response and Impact

The discovery of the massive drug haul has sparked concern among residents in Selsey and the surrounding areas, as the incident underscores the region’s potential vulnerability to smuggling operations. Local authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities near coastal areas.

As the investigation continues, further updates are expected from the NCA.
