Gravesend Lifeboat Aids in Multi-Agency Rescue of Man Stuck in Mud

A dramatic rescue unfolded yesterday morning when a lifeboat was launched from Gravesend to assist a man who had become ensnared in mudflats near Erith, in a tense operation involving multiple emergency services.

The incident began at approximately 10:00 AM on July 22, when HM Coastguard requested assistance after reports emerged of a man stuck in the mud at Erith Rands. Responding to the urgency of the situation, which was exacerbated by an incoming tide, a coordinated effort was quickly mobilized.

London Fire Brigade, London Ambulance Service, and a specialized drone team were deployed to the scene alongside the RNLI lifeboat crew. A key member of the lifeboat team was pivotal in organizing the ground response, which included navigating the complexities of the rescue operation amidst challenging conditions.

RNLI Duty Commander Dave Greenfield recounted the critical moments: “Upon our arrival, we located the stranded individual but initially could not reach him. We quickly decided to deploy a crew member ashore to better coordinate with the London Coastguard and guide the support from our colleagues at the London Fire Brigade, who managed to reach the casualty with specialist equipment.

The man was eventually extricated from the perilous mudflats using a mudpath—a technique involving laid mats that provide stable footing over the unstable surface. After his rescue, he was treated on-site by paramedics.

A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade detailed the operation’s timeline and resources, noting, “Firefighters arrived promptly after being called at 10:09 AM and concluded their part in the rescue by 12:02 PM. Crews from Erith and Plumstead fire stations were instrumental in the operation.

The successful rescue highlights the effectiveness of multi-agency responses to emergencies along the Thames and underscores the importance of quick, coordinated efforts in saving lives in critical situations. The rescued man, whose identity has not been disclosed, is reported to be in stable condition following the ordeal.
