Channel 4’s Amazing Spaces presenter George Clarke has revealed he was robbed at knifepoint near Oxford Circus on Monday evening, losing his watch in a harrowing encounter.
The 50-year-old architect, known for popular property shows like The Restoration Man, shared his frightening experience on Instagram, admitting he feared for his life and felt “angry” that the attacker managed to escape.
The Incident
Clarke, a father-of-three, described the incident in an emotional Instagram post to his 240,000 followers. He explained that while he wanted to fight back, he resisted, fearing he could end up being accused of assault.
In a screengrab from his notes app, he addressed the attacker directly:
“To the little **** who stole my watch tonight… I pity you.”
He added in his caption:
“It’s only a watch at the end of the day. Although I loved it and grafted for it. But I could have been stabbed so let it go… I’m ok. I’m just angry with myself. I wanted to hit him but I’d be the one done for assault!”
Support from Fans
Clarke’s followers flooded his comments with messages of support and concern. One fan reassured him:
“You have every right to be angry… but not at yourself, oh no no.”
Another commented:
“Totally understand being angry, but you’re safe and that’s the most important thing for you and your family.”
Clarke’s Update
Following the outpouring of support, Clarke shared an update expressing gratitude to his fans:
“Thank you for all of your kind words. I really appreciate it. At the end of the day it’s only a watch… I loved it but thankfully it had no sentimental value.”
Ongoing Concern Over Crime
The incident highlights growing concerns about crime in central London, particularly in areas like Oxford Circus, which has seen a rise in knife-point robberies. Police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity immediately.
A representative for Clarke confirmed that the robbery occurred near Oxford Street, one of London’s busiest shopping districts.
Police Investigation
Authorities have yet to release further details about the suspect or ongoing investigations. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Metropolitan Police on 101 or via Crimestoppers anonymously at 0800 555 111.
Clarke’s incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of personal safety in crowded urban areas. Thankfully, the popular TV presenter emerged from the ordeal unharmed, though understandably shaken.
