Garda Found Guilty of Sexual Assault and False Imprisonment at Wicklow Station

In a significant case that has gripped Co Wicklow, Garda William Ryan, 41, has been found guilty of sexually assaulting and falsely imprisoning a woman at Aughrim Garda Station in September 2020. Despite his not-guilty plea to three charges of sexual assault and one of false imprisonment, the jury delivered a guilty verdict this afternoon.

The trial, which took place over several days, heard from the victim, who recounted her terrifying ordeal. She visited the station seeking assistance to retrieve her car, which had been seized while her son was driving. Although initially helpful, Ryan’s behaviour dramatically changed, culminating in the assault.

The victim described how Ryan made inappropriate comments about her body, physically assaulted her, and blocked her exit, coercing her into a position where she felt compelled to show him a personal photograph in an attempt to placate him. This, however, led to further assaults. Overwhelmed with emotion, she testified that it was the worst feeling she had ever experienced, stating she “went numb and froze” during the incident.

In his defence, Ryan presented a different narrative, claiming that the interaction was consensual, characterized by reciprocal flirtation and ended in a consensual encounter. He suggested that the woman had initiated the interaction by showing him provocative photos.

Despite his claims, the jury sided with the prosecution, convicting Ryan of all charges. The verdict has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting serious issues regarding trust and safety with law enforcement.

Following the conviction, Ryan was taken into custody, with sentencing scheduled for October. The case has not only marked a significant personal tragedy for the victim but also raised broader concerns about the conduct of those in positions of power and trust. The community, especially those in Aughrim, awaits the sentencing, hoping for justice and measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
