Drivers across the UK could soon see welcome relief at the pumps, with petrol and diesel prices expected to fall by up to 6p per litre, according to new predictions from the RAC. The move comes as the global price of oil continues to slide, offering some respite just ahead of the traditionally busy Easter travel weekend.
Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, said the price of petrol should drop from the current UK average of 136p to 130p a litre, while diesel could fall from 143p to 137p. These would be the lowest prices in over three years, marking a significant shift for motorists grappling with high living costs.
“As long as the barrel carries on trading around or below the $65 mark, retailers will be obliged to pass on the savings they’re benefitting from to their customers,” said Williams.
“The RAC believes they should be motivated to do so as they continue to be scrutinised by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).”
Why Are Prices Falling?
The drop in fuel prices follows a significant fall in the cost of Brent Crude oil, which dipped to $63.49 per barrel on Monday—its lowest point since April 2021. Analysts attribute the drop to growing fears of a global recession, with market jitters triggered by a new round of US tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump, dampening demand worldwide.
Williams added that if the predicted drops materialise, unleaded petrol would be at its cheapest since summer 2021, while diesel would reach a level not seen since September 2021.
Watchdog Keeps Pressure on Retailers
The Competition and Markets Authority recently voiced concerns about the lack of competition in fuel retailing, saying fuel price margins remain “high compared to historic levels.” This comes despite falling wholesale costs.
“While there are several factors contributing to the higher fuel prices seen in recent months, fuel margins remain stuck at high levels which impacts prices paid by drivers at the pump,” said Dan Turnbull, CMA’s senior director of markets.
To address the issue, the government is set to roll out a Fuel Finder scheme later this year, which will allow motorists to compare real-time petrol and diesel prices—empowering consumers and boosting market competition.
What This Means for Easter Drivers
With millions expected to hit the roads over the Easter bank holiday, the potential price cuts could provide much-needed relief for families and holidaymakers alike.
The RAC is urging retailers to pass on the savings quickly rather than holding back reductions to boost margins—especially as public scrutiny increases.
“Retailers have no excuse. The wholesale price drops are clear. It’s time to do the right thing for customers,” said Williams.
