Residents in Tunbridge Wells are being warned to stay vigilant after fraudsters posing as police officers attempted to scam pensioners in the area.

On Thursday, 16 January 2025, Kent Police received multiple reports of attempted fraud involving phone calls to five elderly individuals. The callers falsely claimed there was criminal activity linked to the victims’ bank accounts.

Scam Details

In one instance, a victim was told of a police investigation connected to New Scotland Yard. The caller falsely identified themselves as Detective Constable Mathew Riley, with assistance from “PC Chrissy,” and instructed the victim to withdraw a large sum of money to aid the investigation. The cash, they claimed, would later be collected by a courier.

Fortunately, none of the targeted victims complied with the fraudsters’ demands.

Warning from Police

Detective Inspector Chris Mayers said:
“Thankfully, none of the intended victims parted with any money, and our investigations are underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding these incidents. Scammers are becoming increasingly calculating in their methods, often targeting vulnerable and elderly members of the community.”

He reminded the public:
“A police officer would never ask for bank details or money over the phone. If you receive a call like this, hang up immediately and report it to Kent Police.

Advice to the Public

• If someone claiming to be a police officer contacts you, take their details and end the call.
• Wait at least five minutes to ensure the line is clear, then call 101 to verify their identity. In emergencies, dial 999.
• Never hand over money or items to a courier following such calls.
