Five Charged After Violent Disorder at Bell Hotel Protests in Epping

Five men have now been formally charged following incidents of violent disorder during recent protests outside the Bell Hotel in Epping, Essex Police confirmed today.
The demonstrations, which began peacefully, escalated into criminal damage and disorder, prompting a robust policing response and multiple arrests over the past week.
Charged with Violent Disorder:

Jonathan Glover, 47, of Springfields, Waltham Abbey – released on conditional bail

Stuart Williams, 36, of Duck Lane, Thornwood, Epping – remanded in custody

Keith Silk, 33, of Torrington Drive, Loughton – conditional bail

Dean Smith, 51, of Madells, Epping – remanded in custody
All four are scheduled to appear at Chelmsford Crown Court on 18 August 2025.
Additional Charge:

Joe McKenna, 34, of Highcliffe Road, Wickford – charged with failing to remove a face covering when directed by police.
He remains on bail and is due to appear at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on 24 September.
Police Statement
Chief Superintendent Simon Anslow of Essex Police stated:
“This isn’t about preventing or limiting people’s lawful right to protest.
Those who express their views peacefully have nothing to fear.
This is about preventing criminality, protecting the public, and maintaining order.
We’ve used tried and tested public order tactics, and we won’t hesitate to arrest and charge those who engage in violence.”
Police have confirmed a continued visible policing presence in Epping to reassure the public and engage with local concerns.
Crown Prosecution Service Caution
Rebecca Mundy, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS East of England, issued a reminder:
“There are active criminal proceedings against those charged.
It is vital to ensure a fair trial, so we urge the public not to share or comment on the case online in ways that may prejudice proceedings.”
